How to Register a Company in Egypt Through GAFI
How to prepare for Egyptian company incorporation through GAFI, submit the online application and check tax, commercial registry and licensing steps.
Short answer
Registering a company in Egypt starts with choosing the legal form and the correct service on the official General Authority for Investment and Free Zones (GAFI) portal. For supported forms, the process can include submitting company data and documents online, paying fees, tracking review and signing incorporation documents electronically.
Receiving incorporation documents does not always mean the business may start operating. Tax registration, commercial registry entry, Chamber of Commerce documentation and activity-specific licences may still be required.
What is GAFI?
GAFI is the Egyptian government authority responsible for investment and company-incorporation services. Its official e-incorporation page says the digital route covers specified forms, including sole proprietorships, limited and general partnerships, and limited liability companies under the stated legal framework.
The available forms, documents, fees and processing time shown by the selected service should be rechecked on the day of application. They can depend on the activity, founders, capital structure and governing law.
What should you decide before opening an application?
Prepare a working brief with:
- a precise description of the business activity and operating location;
- founder, manager and ultimate-beneficial-owner details;
- proposed company names and registered-office information;
- the legal form, capital and ownership percentages being considered;
- representative and power-of-attorney details where relevant;
- possible sector approvals and operating licences;
- foreign documents that may require translation, legalisation or authentication.
This is preparation, not a universal document list. The exact requirements must come from the selected official service. Legal and tax consequences should be checked before committing to a structure or paying fees.
How does GAFI electronic incorporation work?
GAFI’s current official process describes these steps:
- Create an account on the GAFI e-services portal.
- Choose the legal structure and review its documents, fees and service timeline.
- Complete the company and participant data, upload the requested files and submit for review.
- Track the application and respond to official comments through the account.
- Pay the incorporation fees through the method shown in the portal.
- Electronically sign the memorandum, articles and notarisation record when the system opens those stages.
- Receive the final documents through the Investor Service Center, Egypt Post or the channel specified by GAFI.
Do not send a supposed government fee to an intermediary’s personal card. The amount, payee and application stage should be visible in the official workflow. Official GAFI pages use gafi.gov.eg and portal.gafi.gov.eg domains.
What must be checked after incorporation?
Egypt’s Internal Trade Development Authority (ITDA) separately describes commercial-registry procedures. Depending on the company and activity, the post-incorporation file may include:
- final authenticated incorporation documents;
- registration with the Egyptian Tax Authority and a tax card or identifier;
- Chamber of Commerce documentation;
- entry in the Egyptian Commercial Registry;
- ultimate-beneficial-owner records where required;
- technical, municipal or sector-specific approvals before trading;
- accounting, filing and employment obligations.
Some steps may be coordinated through GAFI or an Investor Service Center, but verify the final status of each requirement. A positive incorporation status is not a substitute for an operating licence in a regulated activity.
What should foreign founders verify?
Foreign ownership and document rules can depend on the activity and legal structure. Before submission, confirm:
- whether foreign participation is permitted for the planned activity;
- passport, translation, legalisation and authentication requirements;
- the representative’s exact authority;
- whether security, sector or professional approvals apply;
- immigration and work-permit requirements separately from company ownership.
Company incorporation should not be treated as automatic permission to live or work in Egypt. Those are separate legal processes.
If using an adviser, separate the professional fee from government charges in a written engagement. Do not share an account password, one-time code or electronic-signature credential.

Common questions
Can an Egyptian company be registered entirely online?
GAFI offers electronic incorporation for the forms and stages listed on its portal. Whether a specific case can be completed without an in-person step depends on the structure, documents, electronic signature and review outcome.
Which documents are required?
There is no safe universal list. Requirements vary by form, founders and activity. Use the list generated by the selected official service; foreign documents may need translation and authentication.
Are GAFI incorporation documents enough to start trading?
Not necessarily. Confirm tax registration, commercial registry, Chamber of Commerce and every activity-specific approval before starting regulated operations.
